Saving Money is the Same as Earning It
Tuesday October 31st 2006, 8:07 pm - Category: Making Cash, Saving Ideas

I’ve learned that there’s two ways of having more money, by earning it and by saving it.

Cutting down on unnecessary expenses, using coupons, buying things when there’s a special, a discount, a rebate, day after christmas sales. While these things don’t necessarily put more money into your pocket, they allow you to keep more money in your pocket. So in effect, these things directly lead to having more money at the end of the day.

You can always economize. Everything from fixing that leaky faucet, to changing your light bulbs to more efficient ones, to even picking up pennies you find on the floor, the possibilities are endless.

Advantages of Paying Your Bills Almost Late
Friday October 27th 2006, 11:30 am - Category: Saving Ideas

When I would get bills mailed to me, I would immediately pay them, as a fiscailly responsible individual. Lately though, I’ve been paying these bills only a day or two before they’re due. Here’s some of the advantages of doing that.

  • You get to keep more of your own money for a longer period of time. How is this beneficial? You’ll earn more interest on that money. You’ll have more money to make investments on your business. The credit card company or DMV, etc, won’t have your money for nearly a month.
  • You won’t be charged any finance/interest fees. Since you’re bill isn’t technically late, just barely on time, there aren’t any fees or disadvantages to doing this.
  • With credit card bills, it will help your credit score or credit rating. When I checked my credit report last, about 5 months ago, I noticed that it showed my credit card “balance carried” amount every month. It would also show as $0. Even though I might have spent a good thousand dollars in a month, since I paid the bill immediately after it became available, it’d show as $0. So creditors would think I never spend a dime on a credit card and might not deem me as credit-worthy in their eyes.

Updated Dating Services Guide Site

Dating Services Guide

Due to lack of traffic and a low CTR (click-through rate) I’ve completely re-done and redesigned my Dating Services Guide site. The big change was that I’ve made it emphasize the title, a dating services guide. I took a few of the top dating services and gave some quick basic information on each one. It’s sort of a dating review site now, which is what it should be and will be from now on. I plan on adding more dating sites and more reviews in the next few months. If I see positive signs from the update/change, I’ll surely do more work on it. If I see no changes, why waste any more time on it.

Something interesting (disturbing, too) that I noticed was that the site has a Google PageRank of 2. But when I type the URL in google, I get the dreaded: “Sorry, no information is available for the URL …” message, meaning it is banned. I think I need to see a PR0 to see the site banned, so I’m confused at the moment. Now that I think about it, it might have something to do with that site being hosted as a subdomain of another site. I’m going to switch the hosting on it tonight and then see if that makes any difference when the googlebot comes by again.

Alright well I sold all my stocks and cashed out. After the insane fees I was charged, I was only left with just over 8 bucks. I figured my life is better off with $8 than without it. This should be their new ad.. I hate the fine print!

What I Don’t Like About HSBC
Friday October 20th 2006, 4:52 am - Category: Investing, Making Cash, Savings Accounts

I like their high interest rate. But they don’t update how much money you’re making until the end of the period, every month. With ING, you can log in every single day and see your interest grow day in day out.

The HSBC website also looks like it was built years ago by a beginner in web design. There’s also many features but it’s complicated and ING’s site is much easier to navigate and the sign-up process is much better.

Ultimately what it all boils down to is the money, so I’ll stick with HSBC for the high rates, for now at least.

Won Another Poker Tournament
Thursday October 19th 2006, 8:05 pm - Category: Gambling

Poker

I played in another poker tournament tonight, lasted from 7:00PM-8:15PM, and I won another $200! That puts my poker winnings this year at $1,200 with a $0 investment.

I’d say this brings my poker tournament average to 1 win every 4 tournaments I play in, at $200 for each win, that’s a cool $50 per hour for playing poker. Sweet.

My Share Builder Account
Tuesday October 17th 2006, 11:05 am - Category: Investing

About a year ago, I wanted to get into the stock market so I opened up a ShareBuilder account. I had no idea what I was doing and still to this day, I still have no clue. I bought $20 worth of stock in Google and $20 in Target as an experiment. I was going to track the progress and then just cash-out. If I ever found it real interesting, I’d invest more money in more stocks and become more active in it.

Here’s what my account looks like after a year and a $40 initial investment

My Share Builder Account

There’s a whopping $40.85 in it. Okay so the experiment is over, I don’t have enough time to keep track of my stocks, and it was a valuable expierience. So it’s time to cash out or withdraw my money…

Whoops, here’s the catch. I can only cash out that $0.10 that was paid to me in “dividends”. I have to “sell” my stocks first. Okay so let me go and sell my stock. I go to sell my $17+ in Target stock and there’s a $15.95 fee to do this! I go to sell my Google stock and there’s antoher $15.95 fee! So by my calculations if I want my $40.85 in my account, I need to pay ShareBuilder $30.90 first, leaving me with only $8.95.

So here are my options at this point..

  • leave the $40.85 in my account.
  • sell the stocks and withdraw what’s left - $8.95

One option leaves me with nothing in my pocket, the other with $8.95. However with the first option, I don’t give Share Builder the satisfaction of getting $30.90 from me.

What to do, what to do..

NFL Week 6 Results
Sunday October 15th 2006, 10:45 pm - Category: Gambling

I went 4-4 this week, not good enough for a profit this week either.

Total Wagered This Week: $80

Total Won/Lost This Week:  -$3.56

Total in Sports Book account: $149.45

2006 Season Goal: $500

Looks like I won’t get there, but I’m aiming to get to $200 to at least double my money by the end of the year.

The Hypocracy of Online Gambling Bill
Thursday October 12th 2006, 4:11 pm - Category: Gambling

First of all, this bill was added to a port security bill at the last minute. What a sneaky way of making sure a law passes. There was absolutely no discussion about this law in Congress. Who wants to be the guy who stops a port security bill after all.

Here’s where the new law is loony. You can still gamble in casinos. You can still bet on horse racing and play the lottery. You just can’t play poker online for money anymore. Whether you agree or disagree with gambling there’s plenty of hypocracy going on here.
In about 9 months this will come into effect. Credit cards and banks can no longer process transactions dealing with online gambling. There’s many online marketers who make money sending their visitors to Party Poker and similar sites. They’re going to need to find a new line of work, and fast. A lot of the online gambling companies will most certainly go bankrupt or at least downsize drastically. Without US customers, they have no chance. I don’t see someone in Australia betting $50 on the Dodgers game anytime soon.

What this new law does mean is that the gambling money that was going overseas will now stay here. Casinos in the US will get more business, the US economy would improve and more jobs will be created in the US. It makes sense, but not allowing someone to gamble their own money at BlackJack online in the comfort of their own home really impedes with our first amendment rights.
