Personal Finance Blog With Advice On Making Money And Saving Money

Water is one of the most essential parts of life. You can’t survive without water. What was once a free commodity can now cost big bucks. Instead of cringing when you open your water bill, look for ways to save money while conserving a precious resource. Look below for 6 easy ways to save on your water bill.

1. Keep cold water in the fridge

This doesn’t have to be store bought water. A simple pitcher full of water from the tap will provide you with endless glasses of ice cold water whenever you want it. Think about your water drinking routine. How often do you run the tap for a minute to cool the water off? This act causes waste and in turn, an increase in your water bill.

2. Check the toilet for leaks

A  leaky toilet can cause big water woes. Whether it’s a loud leak or a silent leak, letting your water run is like flushing money down the toilet. Fortunately, checking your toilet for leaks and repairing them are easy and inexpensive projects that most home owners can do on their own.

To check the toilet for leaks, simply put a little bit of food coloring in the tank then leave. Let the toilet sit undisturbed for an hour, then go back and look in the bowl. If you see color in the bowl, your toilet is leaking. To fix the leak, determine what part is at fault. If there’s water flowing over the fill pipe, the issue is with the fill valve. If the flapper doesn’t seal tightly, the chain may need to be adjusted or you may need a new flapper assembly.

Other than that, there aren’t many other components on your toilet. Both the flapper assembly and fill valve can be purchased at your local hardware store and can be installed in just a few minutes with no special tools or skills required. Once the repair is done, check your toilet again with more food coloring to make sure the problem has been eliminated.

3. Avoid letting the water run

This applies to brushing your teeth or taking a shower. The longer the tap is on, the higher your water bill will be. Turn off the sink while brushing and take shorter showers to use less water and lower your bill.

4. Install low-flow fixtures

Low-flow shower heads and other fixtures can be found at any home improvement store. They can be installed in a matter of minutes and will help you save water without sacrificing the quality of the fixture you’re using. Low-flow shower heads help conserve water while amping up pressure to get the same effect at a much reduced rate.

5. Only run full loads of laundry and dishes

Running full loads will reduce water waste and lower your bill. Plan your week ahead of time if you need a specific article of clothing so that you’ll always have what you need ready to go. Dishes can be a little bit trickier, but avoid running your dishwasher half-full or hand-washing too many dishes.

Finding ways to save on your water usage will cut down on your water bill. There are plenty of things you can do to save one of Earth’s most valuable resources while lining your pockets with a little extra cash.
