Top 5 Characteristics of a Thriving Telecommuter
Wednesday April 16th 2008, 10:08 pm - Category: Uncategorized

Many people daydream about what it would be like quit their drab office job and work from home. A work-at-home professional, or telecommuter, has the opportunity to relax at home while earning money. Thanks to the Internet, there are now dozens of careers that can be established from home. From Web developers to customer service representatives, more people work in their pajamas than you realize. My point is this: no matter what kind of field you are in, there is surely a related telecommuting position you could pursue. Having waxed poetic about the work-at-home lifestyle, though, I should explain that telecommuting isn’t for everyone. There are certain characteristics a person must possess in order to find success with telecommuting. Listed below are the top five.

  1. Diligent – Despite the appeal of rolling out of bed and clocking into work, you can’t succeed in this line of work if you are lazy. In fact, you will have to be even more hard working and diligent when you don’t have a boss breathing over your shoulder or co-workers to pick up the slack.
  1. Brave – It takes a lot of courage to turn your back on an orthodox career, particularly if you are settled into a well-paying job. You may have a larger motivation to take the plunge, such as the opportunity to stay home with your children. Still, it takes a brave person to carve out an untraditional career niche.
  1. Eccentric- As I said above, telecommuting is unorthodox. It would never even occur to most people that they could work from home and earn a decent living. The successful telecommuter thinks outside of the box and finds new ways to earn money on their own terms.
  1. Professional – Telecommuters have to find a balance between their eccentric side and their business-savvy nature. You will be your own supervisor when working from home and, in most cases, your own marketer and accountant. So, while it is great that you are having fun in your home office, you still need to maintain professional business contacts.
  1. Flexible – Since you are establishing yourself in a less-than-predictable career, you will need to learn how to go with the flow. Internet professionals, in particular, will need to acclimate to new trends all the time if they are to survive. An ability to adapt to your surroundings is important in telecommuting.

After reading through the above characteristics, working from home may not sound as simple as you previously thought. It takes more than disdain for your current job to make you ready for the work-at-home environment. On the other hand, the benefits of going to work in your bunny slippers can make up for the hard times.

This sounds like something I would love to do. How does a person go about finding employers willing to allow employees to work from home?

I would think it’s best to ask your current employer if you can work part-time from home and part-time from the office.
I have seen work-at-home jobs at monster.com but they are few and far between.
